Specialist diagnosis at the microscopic level.
Supporting oral and maxillofacial diagnosis with laboratory analysis and specialist pathology interpretation.

About Our Service

Specialist Oral Pathology for definitive diagnosis.

Many oral conditions can look similar during routine examination. When the diagnosis depends on understanding tissue at a microscopic level, a biopsy or other laboratory investigation can provide important diagnostic information.
OroScan’s Oral Pathology service combines specialist pathology interpretation with histopathology, cytopathology, selected special stains, immunohistochemistry, consultation and digital pathology workflows.
The pathology report is designed to help the treating clinician understand what the tissue shows and determine the appropriate next clinical step.

Cytopathology

Evaluation of cellular samples where clinically indicated as part of oral diagnostic investigation.

Immunohistochemistry

Selected marker-based laboratory techniques used to support diagnosis in more complex cases.

Special Stains

Specialised staining techniques used in selected cases to highlight specific tissue components or organisms.

Consultation & Second Opinion

Specialist review of challenging oral pathology cases and correlation with clinical information.

Academic & Research Support

Guidance for selected research work and postgraduate academic requirements.

Telepathology

Digital slide sharing and remote specialist pathology support for appropriate cases.

How It Works

From specimen to specialist report.

A clear pathology workflow helps preserve specimen quality and ensures the pathologist receives the clinical context required for meaningful interpretation.

01

Clinical details

The clinician records the biopsy site, history and provisional diagnosis.

02

Specimen submitted

The sample is packaged and submitted according to the required protocol.

03

Laboratory processing

The tissue is processed and prepared for microscopic evaluation.

04

Microscopic analysis

The pathologist evaluates the specimen in the context of the clinical information.

05

Diagnostic report

A structured pathology report communicates the relevant findings.

06

Clinician follow-up

The treating clinician uses the pathology findings with the rest of the case information.

Biopsy & Histopathology

When microscopic examination is needed.

A biopsy allows selected oral tissue to be examined under a microscope. Histopathological assessment can help establish or refine the diagnosis when the clinical appearance alone is not sufficient.

Routine oral biopsy specimens

Microscopic evaluation of submitted oral tissue.

Clinico-pathological correlation

Interpretation supported by the lesion site, history and provisional diagnosis.

Additional laboratory techniques

Special stains or immunohistochemistry may be used when indicated.

Additional Diagnostic Techniques

More tools when the case requires them.

Cytopathology

Evaluation of cellular material can provide useful diagnostic information in selected oral and maxillofacial cases where cytological examination is clinically appropriate.

Special Stains

Special staining techniques may be used in selected cases to highlight particular tissue components, organisms or other microscopic features.

Immunohistochemistry

Selected marker-based techniques can assist diagnostic classification in complex cases where routine histology alone does not provide sufficient information.

Telepathology

Expert pathology support, wherever the case begins.

Digital pathology workflows can help extend specialist expertise beyond a single physical location. Where supported by OroScan’s process, digital slides and relevant clinical information can be shared for specialist review and consultation.

Biopsy site and specimen type

Clearly identify where the sample was obtained and the type of procedure performed.

Relevant clinical history

Include duration, symptoms, important medical history and other details relevant to the lesion.

Provisional / differential diagnosis

Share the clinical diagnostic considerations where available.

When appropriate, supporting images may help provide additional diagnostic context.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Oral Pathology questions answered.

How long does a routine biopsy report take?
OroScan’s existing service information states a 48-hour service for routine biopsies. Complex cases, inadequate samples, additional stains or immunohistochemistry can require more time, so the exact turnaround should be confirmed for each case.
Relevant patient details, the biopsy site, clinical history, provisional diagnosis and the referring clinician’s information help the pathologist interpret the specimen in the correct clinical context.
Immunohistochemistry uses selected tissue markers to support diagnostic classification in appropriate cases. It is not required for every specimen.
OroScan’s pathology services include consultations. A referring clinician can contact the pathology team to discuss the most appropriate process for a review or second opinion.
The biopsy is generally collected by the treating dentist, oral surgeon or clinician. Contact OroScan before sending or bringing a specimen so the correct submission and transport process can be followed.
